Lack of technology is hampering the Zimbabwe Republic Police from combating crimes, some of which have evolved to take a complex nature.

Legal experts say police should embrace information communication technology (ICT) to combat such crime.

The advent of ICT has seen criminals using sophisticated methods making it difficult for police to cope.

The ZRP has been on record as facing difficulties in dealing with white collar crimes due to their complex nature.

Harare lawyer and an expert on issues to do with corruption Dumisani Mthombeni suggests the ZRP need to embrace new technologies in their investigations, adding that Zimbabwe is lagging behind in terms of sophisticated investigations.

The ZRP needs more than US$4 million to network the Criminal Investigation Department as part of embracing new technologies.

Though the organisation has bought computers, progress has been stalled by lack of resources.

ZRP spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba says the organisation is still using manual means in capturing data, especially finger prints, a system that affects investigations.

A number of criminal cases have been delayed due to half backed investigations or failure by the investigating officers to finalise their cases within a reasonable time.

Checking of previous convictions continues to be a nightmare as officers need to manually check from thousands of records.
