The bodies of 11 Zimbabweans who perished in a car accident in Botswana en-route to South Africa on January 10 failed to arrive from Botswana yesterday as expected, Tsholotsho district administrator Nosizi Dube has said.
Dube said there was a lot of paperwork involved and some funds needed before the repatriation of the bodies was done.
The deceased did not have travel documents and were proceeding to South Africa illegally after successfully going through the Botswana border post.
It is believed there are three million Zimbabweans working in SA but most of them are in that country illegally.
APA yesterday reported that some relatives of the deceased are reported to have approached the relevant authorities saying due to financial constraints, they were not sure if they will have enough funds to transport the corpses to Zimbabwe for decent burials.
Senior superintendent Neo Kedumetse of Botswana Police stated that if some of the families fail to take their deceased ones, a decision would be reached between the relatives and the Botswana government to bury them locally.
Zimbabwean Embassy spokesperson Perfect Nyakudya declined to comment.
Yesterday the Zimbabwe government declared another accident which happened in Mashonaland as a national disaster but ignored the plight of the accident which affected families in Matabeleland.
