Zinara preps for illegal vehicle crackdown

THE Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) has acquired 10 vehicles to increase its fleet of patrol vehicles to track down an estimated 170,000 unregistered vehicles believed to be on the country's roads.
The authority said it was losing thousands of dollars in potential revenue as a result of unlicensed vehicles.
Zinara Board chairman Albert Mugabe on Friday said from next month, the authority would be having 10 more vehicles on the road to track down unlicensed vehicles.
"We only had two vehicles for monitoring motorists on the country's roads, a situation that incapacitated us," Mugabe said.
He said it had been difficult for the authority to come up with the exact number of vehicles on the country's roads.
Mugabe said thousands were evading paying licence fees and road taxes because the authority did not have a monitoring system.
"By way of statistics it's difficult to know how many cars are in the country but basing on our vehicle licensing system and cars that we catch on our blitz, there're around 168,000 unlicensed vehicles," he said.
