Commuter omnibus crews in Harare yesterday abandoned passengers while others stopped plying their routes protesting against what they called rising police corruption on the roads.

Minibuses servicing the Machipisa-Kuwadzana route for instance, dumped passengers at the police road block along High Glen Road in New Marimba, forcing desperate commuters to either hitch-hike or complete the journey on foot.

The minibus crews were protesting against police alleged corruption and extortion. Operators said that the purpose of the strike was to show that they do not condone corruption.

Passengers urged relevant authorities to put up mechanisms to put an end to the extortion on the roads.
