'Cannabis cures blindness, Your Worship'

IT was shocking, hilarious as well as disturbing when a partially blind teenager revealed in court that the cannabis (mbanje) he was found in possession of was meant to cure his ailment.

Lovemore Maradza of Mandeya Village appeared before senior Mutare magistrate Mrs Sekai Chiundura being accused of possessing mbanje. Maradza was warned and cautioned before being discharged.

Mr Cuthbert Bhosha prosecuted.

"I advise you never to listen to false prophets who feed you with lies that blindness can be cured with mbanje.

"Look for well-wishers to assist you and get medical help," Mrs Chiundura warned him after he had revealed to the court that a prophet had told him that mbanje cured his illness.

"A prophet advised me that if I mix sugar with mbanje and put it in my eyes I will be able to see properly," Maradza told the court.

Maradza was arrested at Mandeya Business Centre after he was searched by police officers who were on patrol in the area.
