A 22-YEAR-OLD Chipinge woman was last week found hanging on a roof truss, in a suspected case of suicide after she failed to fathom witchcraft allegations levelled against her by fellow villagers.
Machimwase Dhliwayo of Zamuchiya Village in Chief Musikavanhu's area was found hanging in her bedroom a day after five villagers had visited her and accused her of practicing witchcraft.
"They later returned to their homes and left her alone. The following day at around 11am, two of the five people came looking for her intending to take her to a traditional healer. They found her body hanging on a roof truss and they reported the matter to the police," said deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda.
He said they were still digging deep into the matter to ascertain the real cause of her death.
Foul play is, however, suspected.
"She had deep cuts and bruises were all over her body. Her body was swollen. We are still investigating the matter. "The five were not arrested, but just assisted us with information," he said.
Meanwhile, police in Buhera arrested a 20-year-old man, Phillip Zivanai Murimi from Svova Village who fatally assaulted Steven Svova after he had beaten an elderly woman.
Ass Insp Chananda said, on January 29, at around 3pm, the deceased (Steven) came home drunk and started assaulting his grandmother, Mary Svova (76).
"She rushed to seek help from Phillip and the latter confronted and started assaulting Steven. He became unconscious, but did not sustain serious injuries from the attack.
The following day his health deteriorated and was rushed to Murambinda Mission Hospital where he died at around 4pm," Asst Insp Chananda said.
He urged members of the public to solve disputes amicably than resorting to violence.
