Govt urged to make sign language official

The deaf people have called on the government to introduce sign language as an official language so that the majority of people can communicate easily with them.
Mrs Stambeni Manduna who is deaf says a lot still needs to be done to address their plight.
Speaking on the sidelines of a workshop on the research on access to information of the deaf, Onai Hara, a student at the University of Zimbabwe says some of the deaf people die due to lack of valuable information.
The executive director for Deaf Zimbabwe Trust Ms Babra Nyangaire and Senator Nyamayabo Mashavakure called for the standardisation of sign language.
It was also noted at the workshop that sign language should be introduced in tertiary institutions, especially teacher education colleges.
