A 15-YEAR-OLD juvenile from Mwemba Village in Hwange District who is alleged to have raped a five-year-old girl caused a stir yesterday at Hwange magistrates' court when he fainted twice in the dock during plea recording.

Court proceedings reportedly ground to a halt to allow the juvenile to be resuscitated before the teenager's father told the court that the collapse was caused by a spirit which had attacked the family in the form of epilepsy.

"Your worship, my son started behaving like this sometime back prompting us to seek help from a traditional healer who told us that it was a spirit of epilepsy which we inherited from our great grandfather.

"We took him to hospital as well where he was given some medication to counter the attacks," said the father, who was acting as a support person for the teen who appeared before Hwange regional magistrate Mrs Dambudzo Malunga.

It is alleged that sometime on 12 August 2014 and at around 1pm the accused called the child to his bedroom hut before ordering her to sleep on the bed and raped her once. After the act, he then gave her five buns, half a cup of cooking oil and half a cup of brown sugar before threatening her with assault if she told anyone about the incident.

According to State prosecutor Mr Tawanda Sigauke, the Grade One pupil went on to tell her grandmother what had transpired, resulting in her mother taking her to Mwemba Clinic where it was confirmed that she had been sexually abused.

The mother made a police report, leading to the juvenile's arrest.
The trial continues on 12 February.
