Legal experts say the move by Chief Justice (CJ) Godfrey Chidyausiku to expose underperforming judges was done to improve justice delivery in the country.
CJ Chidyausiku exposed underperformance by judges during the official opening of the 2015 legal year, but the move was met with an unexpected response from High Court judges, who branded their superior as out of touch with reality.
Analysts however have stood in defence of the CJ, saying the recent response by some High Court judges is misplaced and meant to promote laziness.
Harare lawyer, Mr Terence Hussein said while the CJ's move to expose the underperformers and hail performers is justified and is expected of any organisation which is accountable to the public.
"Efficiency is key in improving the justice delivery system, so the CJ's move is commendable. If the judges do their work as demanded by the CJ, we will not see courts taking ages to make judgements. Those judges complaining must be reminded that justice delayed is justice denied," he said.
Another Harare lawyer, Mr Tendai Toto said there is no justification to defend underperformance of some High Court judges.
In his speech during the official opening of the 2015 legal year, CJ Chidyausiku said some judges concluded two cases for the whole of last year, a development that weighed down on the judiciary's efforts to clear the backlog.
