Scrap spot fines, says motorists

Motorists have called on authorities to scrap spot fines in compliance with the High Court's ruling.

On Monday, High Court judge Justice Francis Bere ruled that spot fines are illegal.

Motorists say the pronouncement by Justice Bere that spot fines are illegal should quickly be implemented by banning the practice.

Officially opening the High Court in Masvingo on Monday, Justice Bere said there are no legal provisions which empower the police to force motorists to pay spot fines.

Contacted for comment, police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said he was still preparing a statement to respond to the issue.
