Lack of sufficient funds has forced the Harare City Council to abort the solar traffic signal programme which was supposed to see the installation of 68 traffic lights around the capital.
Council owes ZESA in excess of US$72 million but are yet to embrace renewable energy as evidenced by the move to abandon a solar project after only installing 17 out of 68 traffic lights.
Council blames ZINARA for failure to avail sufficient funds.
The Harare City Council has gone on to embark on another solar programme which will see 1 900 solar street lights being installed.
Harare Residents Trust director Precious Shumba says the city council should take the solar project seriously.
"Motorists and residents are struggling yet council and its partners are not prioritising the project," said Shumba.
Although solar installations are expensive at the initial stages, the long term benefits are tremendous.
Solar energy is also abundant in Zimbabwe.
