AN OPERATIONS director at one of the capital's fast food outlets was penalised for stealing US$50 from his employer.
Tafadzwa Jape, who was employed at KFC Belgravia, was left US$100 poorer after being ordered to pay the money as a fine on being found guilty of theft by a Harare magistrate.
He also risks being jailed for 30 days if he fails to pay the fine.
In addition, magistrate Venencia Zvichanzii Mugota slapped him with a wholly suspended 30-day prison term on condition that he does not commit a similar offense within that period.
Tafadzwa was charged on his own plea.
"I took the money with intention to buy an adapter from a nearby supermarket. There was a long queue at the supermarket and I then decided to return to my workplace without buying the adapter.
"I then went back and continued with my work.
" I am not sure whether I dropped the money or not," he said when asked what had happened.
The State led by Shambadzeni Fungura had it that on the day in question at around 2ooohrs Tafadzwa received money from one of the cashiers at KFC.
It was when he took the advantage and pocket the US$50.
The matter was discovered when another employee wanted to take the money for banking.
They discovered that a US$50 was missing.
Tafadzwa attempted to return the money but his efforts hit a snag since his employers had taken the matter to the police.
He was taken to court where he admitted to stealing the US$50 before being ordered to pay US$100 as penalty for his offense.
