A Mutare woman brew a shocker at the Mutare Civil Courts last Tuesday when she revealed that her HIV-positive husband had threatened to rape her as punishment following her maintenance application.

This came to light after Ronald Muvandi had approached the courts seeking protection from his wife, Patience Taringa, whom he accused of assaulting and insulting him. He claimed Taringa was in the habit of tearing his clothes.

In his protection order application, Muvandi stated that his wife always left their matrimonial home without informing him, an accusation Taringa denied and ended up revealing the family's secret that her husband was an HIV patient.

She told the court that the only time she had left without informing him of her whereabouts was when he had threatened to rape her.

"After he was ordered to pay maintenance for our 11-year-old daughter, he threatened to force himself on me so that I will have another child as a form of punishment for the maintenance claim I filed with this court.

"That week I left and went to my sister's place in Dangamvura because I was afraid that he would rape and infect me.

"This man is promiscuous, Your Worship, and I am now fed up. I never assaulted him, but I will be defending myself since he is violent and that is when his shirts get torn," claimed Taringa.

She also told the court that due to his promiscuous behaviour he had contracted the HIV virus.

"I have been forcing him to go for HIV tests since 2008 and he has been refusing all along. When he got sick in 2012 he had some tests done at the hospital and was diagnosed of the HIV virus.

"I tested negative and since then he has been sleeping on the floor. I never asked him to sleep there, Your Worship," said Taringa.

Muvandi had nothing to tell the court as defence on the allegations made by Taringa.

Mrs Chigodora ordered the two to live peacefully. Both were also stopped from using vulgar language in the presence of their child.
