THE old adage, hell hath no fury like a scorned woman came true last Wednesday when a mother-in-law threw an avalanche of blows on her soldier son-in-law accusing him of ditching her daughter.
The soldier's wife, Charity Tadya's mother only identified as Mbuya Tadya could not stomach her son-in-law, Mike Chitambira's refusal to contribute towards his family's upkeep and decided to give him a thorough bashing to knock some sense into his head.
Charity had approached the court claiming $150 as maintenance from Chitambira.
She only discovered in court that he had taken another wife who was already five months pregnant.
Chitambira, who is a member of the Zimbabwe National Army, was accompanied by his sister to court who also fell victim to Mbuya Tadya's venom.
The matter was adjourned to February 23, something that was met with disapproval from Charity's relatives who were in the gallery.
"He wants to go and discuss the matter with his new wife first.
"He needs to be taught a lesson for him to be a responsible father," shouted Mbuya Tadya as the group left the courtroom.
She hurled insults at Chitambira, accusing him of being wicked and negligent towards her daughter and grandchild.
In a rare fit of rage, she attacked Chitambira's sister with fists asking why she had accompanied her brother to court.
And in a flash, she turned her rage on Chitambira.
Mbuya Tadya was clearly not in the best of moods as she exchanged fists with Chitambira.
"Ungadzosere ambuya iwewe hee? Hauna tsika chokwadi" (How can you fight your mother-in-law back? You don't have manners)," she shouted after he had punched her back. When you married my daughter, you were nobody and now that you are a soldier, you dump her in the rural areas while you enjoy life in the city," fumed Mbuya Tadya.
Chitambira, however, shouted back at his mother-in-law saying no one could stop him from marrying another wife.
"It is my right to come with whoever I want to court. You are here with your whole clan, but it has suddenly become a big deal because my sister accompanied me. If the court adjourned the matter to February 23 is that my business?
"Why not wait for the next hearing date? I wonder why everybody is making a fuss out of it.
"I can marry as many wives as I want. Besides that, I am not even legally bound to Charity," said Chitambira.
Chitambira and his sister fled the scene an hour later after Mbuya Tadya decided to start the fight again.
In an interview with The Weekender, Mbuya Tadya said: "We discovered in court that Chitambira married another wife who is now five months pregnant while my daughter is struggling and suffering in Bocha where he dumped her."
