IN an extreme case of jealousy, an axe-wielding Chimanimani woman attempted to kill her sister, before burning her eight-month-old baby beyond recognition, accusing her of being a husband snatcher.
The incident happened last Saturday in Ruwaka Village under Chief Mutambara's area.
The accused, Senzeni Murambatsvina (44), and her sister, Duvekile (33), are married to the same husband.
All hell broke loose after the husband moved out of Senzeni's homestead and chose to stay with her younger sister.
This did not go down well with Senzeni, who on the fateful day struck Duvekile on her right hand and neck with an axe before torching the kitchen hut where the baby was, killing it in the process.
The baby, Jeffrey Mujeki, was burnt beyond recognition.
Manicaland provincial police spokesman Inspector Enock Chishiri confirmed the case and said Senzeni was arrested. She is assisting with investigations.
"We continue to urge people to settle disputes and differences amicably than resorting to violence. Violence can lead to unnecessary loss of lives," Insp Chishiri said.
He said on February 22, Senzeni, who was so determined to kill, went to Duvekile's homestead armed with an axe, accusing the latter of being a husband snatcher.
She told Duvekile, who was seated in the kitchen hut with her baby, that she had come to kill her. They started fighting and Senzeni struck Duvekile once on the right hand and on the neck.
"She set the hut on fire and stormed out. Duvekile also jumped out, but Jeffrey fell from her back and he was burnt to death.
"Senzeni will appear in court soon facing murder and attempted murder charges," said Insp Chishiri.
