RAPING a teenager (16) in the graveyard as part of a healing session landed a Honde Valley Sangoma in trouble after being arrested in connection with the matter. So bizarre was the alleged healing session as the teenager was made to jump over six graves.

Jacob Zari (54) of Chipupuri Village was not asked to plead when he appeared before Rusape regional magistrate, Mr Livingstone Chipadza who adjourned the matter to March 2015 for trial.

Prominent Rusape lawyer, Mr Maxwell Chiwanza is representing Zari and managed to secure bail for him.

Prosecuting, Mr James Wirima, told the court that Zari told the Form Three girl that she had rubbers in her stomach which were causing her illness and can only be removed through sex.

Mr Wirima further told the court that the State was prepared to produce the condom that Zari used in court as an exhibit.

"On November 6, 2014 around 6.30pm, the accused person took the complainant to Chitombo graveyard, saying he wanted to cast away the evil spirits which were troubling her.

He claimed that it was part of her healing process.

"Upon arrival, Zari told the teenager to jump over six graves as a way of casting out the evil spirits haunting her.

"The girl refused saying she was afraid of the graves.  Zari then told her that if she refuses he will use his charms to kill her or she should have sex with him to remove the rubber which was in her stomach.

"Zari then ordered the complainant to undress and she complied and he proceeded to rape her. After raping her, Zari gave the teenager the used condom and told her to throw in the graveyard and she complied.

"Zari and the complainant went to the girl's homestead where he told the complainant's grandmother that he should marry her.

"He also asked the teenager to carry his bag and escort him. On the way from the complainant's homestead, Zari hugged her. She managed to free herself and ran away crying.

"The complainant then reported the incident to her cousin who in turn advised her to report it to the police. On November 7, the girl was medically examined.

The used condom can be produced in court as an exhibit," said Mr Wirima.
