FATALLY assaulting his father with a baton stick landed a Rusape man (25) in trouble after he was arrested in connection with the murder last week.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, confirmed the murder which took place in Tarambavamwe village, under Headman Nedevedzo.

It is alleged that on the day in question at around 9am, the late Rombai Mombeshora (71) came home from fetching firewood in the company of his other son, Philemon, when they found the accused, Weston, at home.

Rombai scolded Weston accusing him of being a loafer. He advised him to find something to do in life.

This, however, ended up in an ugly altercation between the two.

In anger, Rombai picked a baton stick with the intention of giving Weston a thorough hiding.

"Unfortunately Weston grabbed the baton stick from his father and pushed him to the ground. He bashed him with it on the head six times. Philemon came to the old man's rescue and stopped Weston from further assaulting their father," said Insp Chishiri.

After the assault, Rombai went to the dining room to ''rest'' as he was complaining of a severe headache.

He later died at around 5pm on the same day before being taken to hospital for treatment.

Rombai's body was taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as severe swelling of the brain.

Weston was arrested and is set to appear in court soon.
