Zim govt starts reburial of over 700 exhumed bodies

The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe, in conjunction with the Fallen Heroes Trust of Zimbabwe has started the reburial of the remains of over 700 freedom fighters and supporters that were exhumed at Chibondo Mine in Mt Darwin, ZBC News reported on Wednesday.


Chaired by Cde George Rutanhire, the trust has been exhuming bodies at Chibondo Mine since March this year.


The Fallen Heroes Trust of Zimbabwe said the burial ceremony, which is expected to take 4 to 5 days, is meant to give decent burials to freedom fighters and supporters exhumed at Chibondo.


Government resolved to erect a national monument at the site where thousands of freedom fighters and war collaborators were dumped by the Smith Regime at Chibondo and some of the remains were exhumed early this year.


The reburial exercise coincides with the 2011 Heroes' Gala to be held at Mt Darwin High School dubed the Chibondo Heroes Gala.


The trust is inviting all Zimbabweans to attend the heroes' gala and support the reburial exercise.
