TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT minister Dr Obert Mpofu has urged all parliamentarians not to hesitate reporting abuse of government assets especially vehicles by officials to any nearest police station.
Dr Mpofu said officials should not treat government vehicles as their personal properties.
He was responding to MP Mawere in parliament who had asked what measures should be taken against such abuses.
He asked Mpofu: "What is Government policy regarding Government vehicles out there on vehicles that are being misused?
"Some people say the cars are personal issue vehicles and hence the misuse, especially when it comes to the use of fuel. There are a lot of leakages.
"We know that we are under sanctions in this country, so I would like to know if there are any plans in place for these vehicles to be properly looked after. We would save on fuel and the money can be used for the betterment of the people of Zimbabwe?."
Minister Mpofu responded: "I want to thank the honourable member for raising such an important question regarding public transport that is vehicles that belong to Government.
"Government vehicles belong to Government. There is a strict procedure on the utilisation of Government assets. So I would like to appeal to the Members of Parliament, to immediately report any abuse of these assets to the nearest police station whether they are vehicles, graders, dozers or any asset that is associated with Government. Those are not for abuse but for proper use for which they would have been issued for."
Most government officials are treating vehicles as personal properties in the process affecting service delivery.
