The police clashed with scores of activists who gathered outside parliament buildings in the Zimbabwean capital on Wednesday to demand the release of freelance journalist and anti-government campaigner Itai Dzamara.

The activists, estimated at around 40, carried placards outside the building housing the National Assembly and Senate in the Harare central business district on Wednesday morning.

They were demanding the release of Dzamara who has been missing since Monday morning when he was allegedly abducted by five men driving a vehicle with concealed number plates.

The alleged abduction has been condemned by rights groups and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Amnesty International and the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition have both called for a probe into the disappearance of the activist who last year handed a petition to President Robert Mugabe's office demanding his resignation.

MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Tuesday blamed the state security apparatus for the kidnapping
