The MDC led Kwekwe City Council is fighting attempts by Ignatius Chombo, the Minister of Local Government, Rural Urban Development to reinstate the former city's director of finance who was dismissed for fraud. Alfred Zingwe the former council director was dismissed from the city council after allegations that he stole US$200 000 from the council in December last year. His fraud case is before the courts.
However, Chombo is fighting hard to force the council to re-instate Zingwe. Zingwe is the Zanu PF secretary for legal affairs for Kwekwe district.
Kwekwe Mayor, Shadreck Tobaiwa said Chombo wrote a letter to him this week instructing him to reinstate Zingwe. However, the Mayor said the council would not re-instate Zingwe as it has enough evidence that he stole ratepayers' money and used it for his personal use.
Meanwhile, the MDC Manicaland province has lodged a police report over the defacing of the party's Chimanimani district offices by a group of Zanu PF thugs led by Joshua Sacco.
Hon. Pishai Muchauraya, the MDC provincial spokesperson said the group was very drunk and left beer bottles at the premises. The incident was witnessed by a number of people who identified the thugs but no arrests have been made.
The MDC Youth Assembly today joined the rest of the world in commemorating this year's International Youth Day. In statement released by the Youth Assembly, they said today is a very important day for the youth of today and the youth of tomorrow.
"We are here today because of the decisions or indecisions of the youth of yesterday and the youth of tomorrow are also largely affected by our decisions or indecisions today," the statement said.
"It is high time that, as the youth we realise that the future belongs to us and our destination is determined by the route we take today. We in the MDC Youth Assembly have put in place the pillars of our struggle in the theme of our movement.
