Zimbabwe jail riots, 3 inmates confirmed dead

The number of prison inmates who died after sustaining injuries during riots that followed protests over relish at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison has risen to three.

The maximum prison on Friday the 13th of March 2015 turned out to be a real horror set.

A group of hard core inmates led a protest inciting their colleagues to join in a protest over relish, setting part of the prison complex ablaze in a situation that sparked a huge riot.

Inmates went riotous burning blankets, destroying the prisons library, and breaking window panes in an attempt to escape.

This resulted in three inmates dying following injuries sustained during the rioting.

Two prison officers are still admitted at the West End Hospital including the Officer Commanding Mashonaland Region Assistant Commissioner George Denya who ended up with a fractured a leg after he had gone to address the prisoners.

He was attacked by an iron bar.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services spokesperson Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Banda Karinda said the situation is now calm.

She, however, added that investigations are being carried out and a board of inquiry will be set up to investigate the cause of the incident.
