A 28-YEAR-OLD Zaka man allegedly fatally struck a female shopkeeper with a log after she demanded her R5, police confirmed yesterday.

Norman Gurazheve (28) of Madise Village under Chief Nyakunhuwa got incensed by his victim's insistence that she wanted her R5 back and struck her on the forehead with a log before leaving her for dead.

Grace Mberengwa (24) who worked as a shopkeeper died a day later at Ndanga District Hospital.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident occurred on Thursday at around 6am.

She said Mberengwa's body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for a postmorterm.

She said the suspect was at large and police had since launched a manhunt.

"I can confirm receiving the report to that effect. We have identified the deceased as Grace Mberengwa of Javangwe Village under Chief Gutu in Gutu. Mberengwa was employed as a shopkeeper and was at the workplace when she met her fate," said Insp Mazula.

"Gurazheve disappeared from the scene after commission of the crime. Police have since launched a manhunt and we are sure that the long arm of the law will catch up with him. He will be charged for murder."

She said on Wednesday at around 2pm Gurazheve was at Mutero General Dealer at Chipato Business Centre when he took R5 from Mberengwa.

"Gurazheve allegedly took a R5 coin from Mberengwa against her will. Mberengwa then pleaded with Gurazheve so that he could give back her coin but the latter would have none of it and instead he moved away from her. At realising that Gurazheve was leaving the shop without giving her back the money, Mberengwa followed him," said Village head Madise.

Upon seeing that Mberengwa was following him, Gurazheve allegedly picked a log and the former sensed danger and ran away.

Gurazheve ran after Mberengwa until he caught up with her upon which he struck her on the forehead with the log and she fell down.

"Mberengwa became unconscious and was rushed to Ndanga Hospital by villagers at the business centre. On realising that his victim had become unconscious, Gurazheve disappeared from the scene. Mberengwa died the following day from the assault," the village head said.

Meanwhile, police have appealed to members of public to desist from using violence to settle disputes. "Members of the public should not use violence to settle disputes. They should seek counselling from elders or the nearest police instead of spilling blood over petty issues," said Insp Mazula.

Zaka District remains at the top in Masvingo when it comes to murder cases. The recent High Court circuit which ended late last month had four cases of murder from Zaka and that was the highest as other districts in Masvingo had two or none.
