President Mugabe appointed Shuvai Mahofa the Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister because he is confident that she will deliver.

This was said by president of the Senate, Edna Madzongwe during a musical gala organised by the Zimbabwe Cross Border and Traders Association (ZCBTA) at Chishamiso Stadium in Chiredzi.

Senator Madzongwe who attended the event on behalf of secretary for Women's Affairs, Grace Mugabe, said the President appointed Mahofa to the post because he is confident that she will address the challenges facing the province.

Senator Madzongwe described Mahofa as a hardworking party cadre whose track record was proof that she will deliver.

"She has all that it takes to deal with challenges bedevilling the province. When the President appointed you (Mahofa), he knew that you can perform the task. I was sent by the First Lady to deliver a congratulatory message to you following your appointment to the highest office in the province," said Senator Madzongwe.

She said Chiredzi was set to benefit from a number of projects to be initiated by government.

"I've heard your concerns, I'll take them to the First Lady and I know she'll act upon them because she's passionate about women empowerment. "I've heard Zimbabwe Cross Border and Traders Association (ZCBTA) requesting for land to be allocated to a housing co-operative named after the First Lady here in Chiredzi and I'll relay the message," she said.

Senate President said the issue of sugarcane workers whose contributions to their union were embezzled by unscrupulous union leaders would be looked into and action taken. "I've heard that workers had their money taken by some unscrupulous officials. That's a serious matter because Zanu PF wants people to lead decent lives and no one is expected to deprive workers of their hard earned income," she said.

Speaking at the same occasion Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Prisca Mupfumira said the abuse of workers' contributions will be addressed soon.

The gala was attended by scores of people and several government officials.
