Man hammers landlord over rentals

CHITUNGWIZA man turned violent and hit his landlord with a hammer three times on the head over non-payment of rentals.

Lawrence Sandalam attacked his landlord Bakari Chera after he confronted him over the issue as he wanted to vacate the house without settling his arrears.

He appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Lazarus Murendo answering to a charge of assault.

He was convicted of the offence and was slapped with $100 fine. Failure to pay the fine attracts one month imprisonment.

It said on March 4, around 11 pm, the two were engaged in a dispute over payment of rentals.

Sandalam reportedly owed the complainant and wanted to vacate the premises leaving the arrears. Sandalam is said to have gone to the police about the issue seeking help.

When he returned, the court heard that the complainant asked him what had transpired at the station.

Reports are that he turned violent and hit the complainant three times with a hammer on the head, leaving the complainant with two deep cuts on the head and hand.

The complainant went and reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of Sandalam and his subsequent appearance in court.
