MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai has taken a begging bowl to the United States of America amid revelations that the beleaguered opposition party is totally broke.
Tsvangirai, Theresa Makone and Elias Mudzuri arrived in Washington DC yesterday, MDC-T secretary general Douglas Mwonzora confirmed.
He said the three would be in the US for four days but declined to divulge much information on the trip saying they were on party business.
"I can confirm that Tsvangirai together with treasurer Makone and Mudzuri, secretary for external relations, are in America. They went to discuss party business. They will probably stay for four days. They're in engagement with other organisations which are like minded," said Mwonzora.
Insiders within MDC-T revealed that Tsvangirai's visit was meant to re-engage Western donors who had since withdrawn their funds due to the poor performance of the party in the July 2013 harmonised elections.
The source said the party was in serious financial crisis which needed an urgent solution, hence the latest trip.
"We're facing a serious financial problem in the party. Tsvangirai's visit is aimed at re-engaging with donors who had deserted the party after the 2013 elections. Last week, we even failed to buy adequate refreshments for people at a press club because we no longer have money? said the source.
Tsvangirai addressed the Bulawayo press club last Wednesday following a visit to the city amid deepening divisions within the party's provincial structures.
Mwonzora said his party was facing financial challenges that were affecting its operations.
"MDC doesn't have enough money like everyone in Zimbabwe. We're in a financial crisis like everybody. There's nothing unique about our situation," said Mwonzora.
