A private security guard hired by Econet Zimbabwe to protect its Gwengule base station in Silobela has been taken to court on a theft charge after he was allegedly captured on CCTV pilfering 180 litres of diesel from a fuel tank at the base station.

Venga Mashanga, an employee of Insec Security, appeared before provincial magistrate Taurai Manwere on Monday facing the theft charge.

The State alleges that on February 28 this year, Mashanga, who was guarding the premises, teamed up with one Timothy Kaunda and another unidentified suspect who is still at large and drained the diesel and loaded it into Kaunda's pick-up truck.

Unbeknown to them, a CCTV camera at the scene captured the drama and electronically relayed the information to Econet head offices in Harare.

The mobile phone operator immediately alerted Mashanga's employers who in turn reported the matter to the police.

Kaunda was the first to be nabbed by the police after they found his car parked at the intercity rank in Kwekwe.
