FORMER Vice President Joice Mujuru and expelled war veterans leader Jabulani Sibanda worked in cahoots to turn war veterans against their patron President Robert Mugabe, an official has said.
Speaking during a meeting of Bulawayo provincial war veterans leaders at Stanley square in the city yesterday, George Mlala, a member of the war veterans Council of Elders, said Sibanda wanted to use former freedom fighters to usurp power and prop up Mujuru.
"Joice and Sibanda were working together to ensure that war veterans did not unite with the President. They wanted to separate war veterans from their patron Mugabe thinking that if he remains without our support, their agenda will be accomplished," said Mlala.
He urged district executive members to be focused and protect the sovereignty of the nation as there were some elements who wanted to foment divisions and disunity.
"We as war veterans need to remain focused. We've refused to be swayed by people who want to subvert authority. Chikerema did it, but we remained focused. Ndabaningi did it, we remained focused. Tekere again did it, we remained focused; Dabengwa did it and we remained focused. Mutasa has done it and we hope we will remain focused. The masses of Zimbabwe depend on you, they need your guidance" he said.
Mlala said Sibanda and his entire team were behaving like "their father", former Zanu-PF secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa, after declining to accept the outcome of the war veterans' congress held in Masvingo.
"Jabulani and the likes of Phuthi refuse to recognise the outcome of the Masvingo congress. Their behaviour is similar to their father Mutasa who is saying Zanu-PF's national congress was illegal. Okwenziwa ngu Phuthi lo Jabulani emaplankeni akutshiyanaga lokwenziwa ngu Mutasa," he said.
