The Zimbabwe Union Passenger Company (Zupco) has acquired 50 new buses to service rural routes as part of its recapitalisation programme.

The 50 buses which arrived in the capital this Monday evening are part of the 100 buses per year strategic plan adopted by the parastatal as part of its turn-around programme, using the company's internal resources.

"We have ensured that 30 cents from every dollar made by the company goes towards recapitalisation and this is a result of that plan," said ZUPCO Board Chairperson, Professor Chipo Dyanda.

ZUPCO Operations Manager, Mr Clifford Muwoni said the buses will be split equally between the northern and southern regions and are primarily for rural routes.

"Our concern is mainly the rural folk who are the bulk of our customers as we are committed to safe and reliable travel so that is where the buses will go," said Mr Muwoni.

Zupco adopted the 100 buses per year strategic plan in 2011 and the latest acquisition brings to 454 the buses bought under the recapitalisation programme from the Chinese First Automotive Works (FAW) in the absence of a government grant.
