ZCTU cracks widens as factions takes each other to court

Cracks within the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) continue to widen as a faction led by Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) Secretary General, Mr Raymond Majongwe has filed an urgent high court application seeking to bar a congress that was pencilled for this Friday in Bulawayo.
In a notice of application case number HC 7815 of 2011 supplied to the media, PTUZ and seven others assumed to be aligned to the incumbent ZCTU President, Mr Lovemore Matombo have taken the ZCTU and six others assumed to be aligned to the outgoing ZCTU Secretary General, Mr Wellington Chibebe to court in a bid to stop the upcoming Friday congress.
Addressing journalists in Harare, PTUZ Secretary General, Mr Raymond Majongwe said there are a number of irregularities within the ZCTU affiliates that need to be resolved before the organisation can hold a congress and warned members from attending the Friday assembly or risk expulsion from the organisation.
Chibebe is expected to officially step down to take up the post of Deputy Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation in Brussels, Belgium end of this month.
Mr Majongwe failed to garner a single nomination from the ZCTU affiliates at the just ended organisation's national council in his bid to land the powerful Secretary General's post.
Speaking at the same occasion, Zimbabwe Rural District Council Workers Union Secretary General, Mr James Gumbi, who is also on Matombo's camp, accused the MDC-T party of politicising the ZCTU, saying the formation should leave workers to decide their destiny.
Since the formation of the MDC in 1999, the labour body has been compromised as it has pursued politics at the expense of workers' interests.
