A cabinet minister says vendors in the streets of Harare risk being arrested if they don't register their businesses and formalise their operations.

The Minister  of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Cooperatives Development, Sithembiso Nyoni who was speaking during the consultative meeting with informal traders at the Zanu-PF headquarters in Harare urged all vendors to form clusters and regularise their business or risk  being arrested

"Had you not been trading during most difficult time in the country I can not visualise what would have happened to our people. We want to support your businesses but it should not be done haphazardly," she said.

Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province, Miriam Chikukwa spoke highly of the new development and said this is set to bring sanity to the capital city.

"This is an important step as our government gears itself towards meeting the goals and objectives of the ZIMASSET. We need to work in one accord for the benefit of the country," said Chikukwa.

Harare City Council Town Clerk, Dr Tendai Mahachi said the vendors must move out of the Harare streets to well organised infrastructure which enables them to conduct their business profitably and comfortably.

"Small businesses if supported can generate employment for our youths and women who form the majority of our population," he added.

The decision to formalise vendors businesses comes at a time when many people are complaining about the shortage of walking space in the city as all the pavements have now become a market place for vendors.
