Police mum on Easter accidents

Police have remained mum on traffic accidents and other crimes committed during the duration of the Easter Holidays, insisting the consolidated statistics would be released today.

This is contrary to traditional practice, where the force released reports to the media on accidents and general crime updates on a daily basis from Good Friday until Easter Monday.

This year police national spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba declined to furnish the media with updates since Friday, insisting the reports would be made available today.

However, Asst-Comm Charamba issued a statement on Thursday, where the force pledged to deploy heavily on major roads to ensure normalcy on the country's roads.

She said more patrol teams in suburbs would also be deployed to maintain peace, but no public information could be released during the entire period.

Efforts to obtain the accident statistics from provincial police commanders were also fruitless as their spokespersons referred all the questions to Snr Asst-Comm Charamba in Harare.
