A 34-YEAR-OLD man was last week slapped with a $150 fine or four months imprisonment for taking the law into his own hands by severely assaulting a woman who owed him property worth $45.

The State, led by Mr Shepherd Chavarika, alleged that Calvin Manyau of Manica Bridge bashed Ruth Mashiri who owed him a goat and $15 cash. The court heard that on April 8, Manyau went to Mashiri's homestead demanding his arrears and she pleaded with him to extend her payment period since she had no money at that time. This did not go down well with Manyau who stormed Mashiri's homestead the following day brandishing a knife and empty bottles.

He started assaulting Mashiri with bottles. He severely bashed her with a sjambok.

A report was made to the police leading to Manyau's arrest.

Asked why he had committed the offence, Manyau said he wanted his dues back and had no intention whatsoever of harming Mashiri.

Mutare magistrate Mr Poterai Gwezhira advised him not to take the law into his own hands but to seek justice from the courts whenever faced with such challenges.
