Police yesterday said 11 people died in separate road traffic accidents recorded over the Independence Day holiday.

In a statement, national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said most of the accidents involved pedestrians trying to cross busy roads or standing by the roadside.

Over the same period last year, road accidents claimed 10 lives.

"Police are concerned with the loss of human life on our roads. We are passionately appealing to all road users to have conscience when driving and respect other road users," Charamba said.

The conduct of some commuter omnibus operators is disturbing and in some instances nerve-wrecking; for example, driving through red robots, overtaking in front of oncoming vehicles, driving dangerously in between lanes and speeding in residential areas.
