A 24-year-old Zimbabwean woman was arrested at India's Indira Gandhi International Airport last week after she was found in possession of 12,5 kg of ephedrine drugs worth over $1,7 million.
According to media reports, the woman, identified as Sandra Moyo, was arrested by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) because of her suspicious behaviour.
A body search found nothing, but when her luggage went through an X-ray scanner, two packets of pseudo-ephedrine weighing 12,5kg were discovered.
"She came on a tourist visa to India. She was supposed to travel from IGI Airport to Johannesburg via Abu Dhabi, flight No. EY-211," a CISF spokesperson was quoted as saying.
After apprehending Moyo, the CISF called Narcotics Bureau Sleuths who took her into custody and seized the drugs.
In April last year, a 32-year-old Zimbabwean student, Elder Rizive, was arrested at Thiruvananthapuram Airport, India, after being found in possession of 25kg ephedrine drugs.
A year earlier, Lydia Ndira Murwira (43) was arrested for smuggling ephedrine at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
In 2012, 16 Zimbabwean women were stuck in Asian jails with 14 convicted of drug smuggling and two others awaiting the conclusion of their trial and face the death penalty if convicted.
Of the 16 women, 14 were jailed in China where they had been convicted of offences ranging from drug trafficking to illegal ivory trade.
