The MDC-T organising Secretary Abednico Bhebhe has said he sympathises with former Zanu-PF Hurungwe West MP Temba Mliswa in his attacks and humiliation by his former party saying the move by the party supporters defeats the purpose of democracy and political rights.
"I sympathize with Temba Mliswa, the former Zanu-PF Hurungwe West MP and the Mashonaland West provincial chairman, who is on the receiving end of Zanu-PF's terror," he said. "Mliswa says he now realizes that violence is a culture that is in Zanu-PF, and is pleading with Mugabe to intervene and stop the reign of terror in Hurungwe West where he is standing against his former party as in independent in the June 10 by-election."
Bhebhe said Mliswa was a feared Zanu-PF member in his constituency when MDC-T complained of his party's violence.
"But be the case, I sympathise with him as NO Zimbabwean deserves any kind of violence - no matter the political differences," he said. "We have always stated that you cannot divorce Zanu-PF from violence and any kinds of terror as they are like Siamese twins, thus we are not participating in the by-elections because of such."
Bhebhe said Zanu-PF will always unleash its bands of soldiers, war veterans and militias to terrorise the opposition, or independent candidates as is the case with Mliswa to ensure that it wins any election by hook or crook.
"It is premeditated violence, designed to instill everlasting fear into the electorate before the polling day," said Bhebhe. "By the time the election is held, the bands of killers will have melted into the night but some prospective voters will have fled, while the remaining others will be terrified to vote against the party."
Bhebhe said these have been Zanu-PF's tactics of intimidation since independence.
"Thousands of lives have been lost to Zanu-PF's terror since 1980 - Mugabe sent brigades of soldiers to Matabeleland in the 1980's and nearly 20 000 lives were lost, the MDC since its formation has lost hundreds of supporters to this Zanu-PF violence, before, during and after elections…the example are too many to mention," he said.
