A 39-YEAR-OLD Wedza man who allegedly staged a robbery after converting to his own use more than $7 000 from a credit union was on Thursday arraigned before Marondera Magistrate Josephine Sande facing theft of trust property charges.

Edson Mahuda was dragged to court by 19 members of the Zama Zama Club, accusing him of stealing $7 110 after claiming he had been robbed.

The accused, however, claimed he only had $3 000 at the time he was allegedly robbed.

The matter was postponed to Tuesday next week.

According to court papers, on November 25 last year, the accused allegedly hatched a plan to steal the money resulting in him allegedly stage-managing a robbery.

He alleged that on the day in question, at around 10pm while walking home after closing his shop, three men aboard an Isuzu truck approached and asked him to return to his shop so they would buy some maize meal.

Mahuda said he complied, but alleged on their way back, the men started to assault him over undisclosed allegations.

He alleged that the assailants later tied him to a tree before disappearing for about 30 minutes, while one of the men stood guard.

He was later left by the roadside only to be rescued by a passerby after being ransacked. It is alleged that he reported the matter to police.

However, Mahuda was arrested following investigations by the police who ruled that he faked a robbery case to get away with the club's money.
