Former MDC-T Treasurer General Elton Mangoma has been detained by police over unclear circumstances, his party has said.

Mangoma, who is represented by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights  (ZLHR) board chair Beatrice Mtetwa, reported at Harare Central Police Station around 9:30 am and was interrogated by Inspector Mandizha before he was locked up.

Mangoma was arrested for allegedly flouting tender procedures when he served as energy minister two years ago.

Party national spokesperson, Jacob Mufume said, "The police at it again they detained Elton Mangoma the Treasurer General of the Renewal Team on frivolous charges without any basis at all," he said.

"We as a party and a society condemn the partisan use of the police to enhance sectoral and partisan agendas.

"The police seem to have a sadistic desire to detain people in their lice infested cells.

"They have designed their own form of pre-trial punishment that is both unconstitutional and primitive."

Mufume said the party condemn the move by the police and the continued criminalization of opposition politics in Zimbabwe.

"Our prayers and thoughts are with him during this trying time.

"The Mangoma we know and love will not be bowed by these ghastly and cowardly acts by a regime whose sell by date has since gone by the courage to act differently."
