Former Energy Minister Elton Mangoma who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly flouting tender procurement procedures has been freed.
Harare magistrate Douglas Chikwekwe granted Mangoma $1 000 bail after Sharon Mashavira of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) indicated that they were not opposed to his admission on bail and remanded him out of custody to 15 June 2015.
Chikwekwe ordered Mangoma, who was charged with criminal abuse of duty as a public officer in contravention of Section 174 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, to report once a week on Fridays at the Zimbabwe Republic Police's Criminal Investigations Serious Fraud Squad Section and to continue residing at his Harare residence as well as surrender his passport to the Clerk of Court at Harare Magistrates Court.
Mangoma's lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights tabled several complaints against the police before Magistrate Chikwekwe including the intrusion and invasion of her client's privacy after the police asked him to fill in a separate form providing some personal details with no link to the alleged offence. Mtetwa also protested that the police officers had not furnished her client with the tender documents and the minutes of meetings detailing the commission of the alleged offence.
Mangoma was arrested on Tuesday at Harare Central Police Station in the company of her lawyer. This was after the police had indicated that they were interested in interviewing the former Makoni North legislator.
