ABOUT 300 vehicles belonging to individuals and companies that were impounded for various defects and have not been claimed for a long period now are set to be auctioned.

These are vehicles that have been impounded either because they were involved in an accident, defective or any other reasons.

However, Government is yet to set the date for the public auction for the vehicles, which are scattered at Vehicle Inspection Department depots country-wide.

Secretary for Transport, Communication and Infrastructural Development, Mr Partson Mbiriri, made the announcement in a Government Gazette published last Friday.

In an interview on Monday, Mr Mbiriri said the law allowed them to sell the vehicles if they remained unclaimed for a certain period.

"We are auctioning vehicles that have overstayed within a stipulated period," said Mr Mbiriri.

He said storage costs were actually more than the value of the cars.

There appears to be a mistake with regard to the notice in the Government Gazette as the deadline given to owners is the same day when the notice was published.
