The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has dismissed claims by Raymond Majongwe and ousted leader Lovemore Matombo that another ZCTU Congress will be held in December 2011.
In a press statement issued today, the ZCTU Secretary general,Japhet Moyo, said as far as the ZCTU is concerned the issue of the Congress is water under the bridge as a Congress was held on 19 and 20 August 2011 where a new leadership was ushered in. It is important to note that the Communications and Allied Services Workers' Union (CASWUZ) where Matombo comes from participated in the Congress right through to the elections. Majongwe's union the Progressive Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe was not eligible to participate in the Congress as the union was in arrears.
Moyo said, another point to note is that the four unions that are purported to have joined Matombo and his group are not members of ZCTU as their applications for affiliation had not been approved yet so the twelve unions that are alleged to be "disgruntled" do not exist.
"In fact what the ZCTU has established is that only 6 figureheads claim to be "disgruntled" yet their membership on the shop floor is behind ZCTU. The bonafide Commercial Workers' Union of Zimbabwe led by Lucia Matibenga is affiliated to ZCTU. The Transport and General Workers' Union was disaffiliated for non-payment of subscriptions hence it is also not a member of ZCTU. Consequently, the claims by this group are illegitimate just as the leaders of the group are', said the statement.
The workers decided in Bulawayo, and the ZCTU says it stands by the mandate that was given to the newly elected leadership led by George Nkiwane.
Moyo said it is unfortunate that this group (Majongwe and Matombo) has sought to destabilize the labour movement using unorthodox means. The ZCTU Congress of 19 and 20 August 2011 went ahead on the strength of a High Court order that dismissed Majongwe's application to stop the Congress. Justice Susan Mavangira actually dismissed their application with costs.
The current ZCTU leaderships says this is a sad and unprecedented development in the history of the labour movement but ZCTU stands by the outcome of the just ended Congress. It is unfortunate that these comrades have allowed a situation whereby they are used by a third force to try and divide the labour movement.
