Information minister Jonathan Moyo has cautioned Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa's backers not to 'spill blood' but they should engage the electorate.
Moyo told BBC's HardTalk programme that Mnangagwa was handpicked by President Mugabe to be his assistant and not to succeed him.
That angered vice president's allies.
Engaging his followers on his official twitter account Moyo said: "These so called VP allies should learn to persuade the electorate to back him without threatening to spill blood!."
"Even a fly would not be scared by electoral cowards masquerading as allies!" Moyo wrote on his twitter handler.
He did not explain further his reference to "spill blood."
Moyo is believed to be aligned to a faction that pushed for Vice-President Mujuru's ouster ahead of the Zanu-PF congress last December.
The faction had the blessings of First Lady Grace Mugabe, who led the onslaught against Mujuru through nationwide rallies where Moyo's ministry was a vital cog.
