President Robert Mugabe and his lieutenants should be brought before the International Criminal Court for political and economic crimes, says Tendai Biti, the secretary general of the MDC Renewal Team.

"They are not fit to govern this country. They must be prosecuted," said Biti, who is back from the USA where he briefly went on a fellowship recently.

He was reluctant to shed light on his political plans, saying he was busy at his law firm. "I am not ready to tell you what we are doing in the Renewal Team. That is for Jacob Mafume, our spokesperson," he said. Mafume could not be reached by the time of going to press.

Biti was among the 21 Renewal Team legislators who were expelled from parliament after the MDC-T argued that they had left the party that sponsored them in the 2013 general elections and their seats must be declared vacant.

The expulsions gave way to by-elections in 14 of the constituencies, his included, and the mini-polls will be held on June 10. Immediately after his expulsion and an unsuccessful court challenge, Biti travelled to the USA to join the Centre for Global Development (CGD) as a visiting fellow.

He has publicly acknowledged that the opposition has failed the electorate in the fight for democracy, a position critics have seen as signalling his departure from active politics.
