Government disburses agriculture equipment

Government has commenced the disbursement of mechanisation and irrigation equipment under the More Food for Africa Programme, with a target to cover all the country's provinces and add new hecterage under irrigation.
The first tranche of mechanisation and irrigation equipment acquired through the US$98,6 million loan agreement between Zimbabwe and Brazil has started to be disbursed in phase one of the More Food for Africa Programme.
The Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development, Dr Joseph Made said the first phase of the equipment worth US$38 million will benefit over 22 000 communal and A1 farmers in eight of the country's provinces.
Minister Made challenged those set to benefit under the project to work towards fulfilling the vision of the country's leadership in creating a vibrant agriculture value chain.
The state-of-the art equipment is set to transform the local agricultural sector and resuscitate irrigation schemes that had folded to ensure the country attains food security.
Under the programme, a total of eight irrigation schemes in each province will benefit from the arrangement, while key departments such as Agritex, Department of Mechanisation and Agribank will be involved in the roll out.
