Zimbabwe bus accident, death toll rise to 20

One more person has died from injuries sustained after a Chawasarira bus was involved in a road accident along the Harare-Bulawayo highway on Thursday morning, bringing the death toll to 20.

The accident, involving the Chawasarira bus, a haulage truck and a Lofombo bus, occurred near Bryn Farm, 15 kilometres from Norton towards Chegutu.

24 others were seriosuly injured.

Eye-witnesses and passengers said the accident occurred when a Chivi bound Chawasarira bus burst its right front tyre and side swiped a haulage truck going the opposite direction, killing 18 people on the spot.

A Lofombo bus overturned at the same spot whilst trying to avoid the Chawasarira bus which was in front, killing one person.

Police Assistant Commissioner Kenny Mutombeni, who was at the scene, confirmed the accident, adding that 24 people had been taken to Harare Hospital. He urged all road users to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.

When ZBC News arrived at the scene of the accident, police details were still identifying the accident victims while survivors were still in a state of shock as they tried to notify their relatives about the horrific incident.

A survivor, Musiyiwa Sahi, who escaped with her seven months-old baby, said the Chawasarira bus driver had been speeding and passengers had been appealing to him to reduce speed until the accident occurred.
