A Harare conman was yesterday jailed for an effective two years after luring a Harare man to donate his Toyota Vigo to him purporting that it would be handed over to President Mugabe.
Tawanda Mavunga (28) of Number 30 George Road, Hatfield, Harare, took the vehicle and sold it for his personal benefit.
He pleaded not guilty to fraud charges, but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe sentenced Mavunga to five years in prison and one year was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Two more years were suspended on condition that he restitutes Dairai Kanoyangwa (44) of Number 24 Lemington Road, Greystone Park in Harare of his vehicle. In passing sentence, Mr Mahwe said Mavunga brought the President's name into disrepute.
"He defrauded the complainant who gave him his vehicle to give to the President. Mavunga's behaviour is very bad. He would go around tarnishing the names of very high-ranking State officials like President Mugabe for his personal benefit.
"It was by luck that the complainant came to know the truth through the person who bought his vehicle. Otherwise up to now he would believe that people have to donate their property to the Head of State to avoid violence and destruction to their property.
"This is very bad to the Head of State who is innocent and doesn't even know that his name was used in such fraud."
