Illegal vendors abusing Grace Mugabe

Illegal vendors countrywide have been abusing First Lady Grace Mugabe's name claiming that she allowed them to continue trading in central business districts.

A state run Sunday Mail columnist- Bishop Lazarus - COMMUNION today said responsible authorities were in collusion with the illegal vendors.

Last week, Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo  gave vendors up to Monday to move out of Harare's CBD, failure of which the army and other security agents would forcibly eject them from the streets.

But Small and Medium Enterprises and Co-operative Development minister Sithembiso Nyoni said Cabinet had on Thursday rescinded the decision and extended the deadline to June 26.

"On June 26, we are going to launch the solution. From June 26, anybody who is not registered as a vendor and has no card and number will not be allowed in the city of Harare,"

Bishop Lazarus wrote his column today: "This Bishop has been preaching against this menace for quite some time and at one point thought the responsible authorities were in collusion with the illegal vendors. The madness and the chaos was just too much.

"Of course, one day the Ministries of Local Government and Public Works and SMEs and Co-operatives Development will have to explain why they let things get out of control in the first place.

"For now let's sort out the mess on the streets.

In the same vein, this Bishop does not understand why it took this long for the Zanu-PF Women's League to put it on record that First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe - who is the Women's League boss - was against illegal vending?

Illegal vendors have been abusing the name of the First Lady and this Bishop appealed to Chombo to set the record straight.

Where were the Women's League officials when this poor Bishop was doing their duties?

For those who have been lying that the First Lady told local authorities to "leave the illegal vendors alone", here is exactly what she said: "Mapurisa, please mapurisa! Ngatiregerei kutorera vanhu zvinhu zvavo. If they are selling at undesignated places, tell them peacefully, they will understand."

Well put! And we hope the authorities remember this sensibility as they relocate the vendors.

In the same vein, this Bishop would want the authorities to move with caution as they relocate the vendors.

This noble exercise which has the support of every thinking Zimbabwean can tarnish the image of the country if it's not handled properly.
