ZLHR drags Chombo, Sekeramayi to court over vendors

Zimbabwean human rights lawyers have hauled Defence Minister Sydney Sekeramayi, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Ignatius Chombo and Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni to court seeking an order to interdict them from chasing away, evicting and confiscating goods.
The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights Communications officer Kumbirai Mafunda said the development come at a time when Chombo and the officers from the defence forces openly declared war on vendors if they did not vacate the streets by today (Monday. But the government has extended the ultimatum to June 17 indicating that the vendors should be winding up their operations in the cities streets and by June 17 they must have moved out.
"The lawyers are also seeking an order to interdict the Sekeramayi, Chombo and Manyenyeni from threatening the informal traders and want Sekeramayi to instruct the Joint Operations Command and other security service members to desist from "dealing" with the informal traders and not to interfere with their business activities in any way," said Mafunda.
Thousands of people are surviving through streets vending due to the escalating unemployment rate as the companies continue to close.
