The Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara) says it has collected $32 million this year against a projected target of $55 million.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development, Zinara officials were taken to task by the legislators seeking explanation on how much has been collected from the public since 2012 and how much has been disbursed to local authorities.

The legislators also reminded Zinara that beyond the completion of the rehabilitation of the Plumtree-Mutare highway, the organisation still needs mechanisms to prevent road carnages.

While local authorities have complained that what Zinara is disbursing to them is too little to make a difference in their budgets, the authority has insisted it should be allowed even to control parking revenues within cities.
