Five people died and 14 others were injured when a kombi they were travelling in overturned at the 77km peg along Mvurwi-Kanyemba Road after the driver failed to negotiate a curve on Tuesday, police confirmed yesterday.

National Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said; "The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the death of five people in a road accident involving a public service vehicle, which occurred in Guruve on Tuesday."

Chief Sup Nyathi said the kombi, a Nissan Caravan, was travelling towards Mushumbi Pools with 16 passengers on board and the driver failed to negotiate a curve and encroached into the lane of oncoming traffic.

"He collided with an oncoming Toyota Dyna two-tonne truck.

"As a result of the collision, the kombi veered off the road and overturned, killing three passengers on the spot. Fourteen people sustained serious injuries," he said.

The injured were taken to Guruve Hospital where the drivers of both vehicles died on admission.

Names of the deceased are still being withheld until their next of kin have been informed.
